WEST BROMWICH ALBION - The Saturday Men John Fletcher's "The Saturday Men" is a well made BBC documentary about the off-field lives of the players and others at West Brom. The film shows board room decisions, training sessions, supporters quibbling, the struggle to make it onto and maintain one's position on -- the first team, and a touching sequence showing a retiring player starting a new career as a sales representative for a machine parts distributor. Made at a time when even the star players had to work for a living after retirement, and most others were living a modest life even at the peak of their careers, this film shows players who play for their own love of the game

Great Teams: Derby & Leeds, 4. The Liverpool Years, 5. Local Derby's, 6. Goalscorers, 7. British Clubs in Europe, 8. The FA Cup.

1989 THE BIG MATCH - 21 Years Of London Football Whichever team you follow, no-one can deny that the 21 years from 1968 to 1989 provided us with an incredible number of star players, sensational matches and headline-making news stories.
Who could forget the brilliant play from the likes of Peter Osgood, Charlie George, Stan Bowles, Trevor Brooking and Glenn Hoddle? It was players such as these who made sure that London clubs have been involved throughout the years in so many nerve-tingling encounters.

There was Chelsea's epic F.A. Cup victory over Leeds United; Arsenal's glorious double in 1971 and of course, the incredible Championship decider of 1989.

Spurs dramatic UEFA Cup triumph on penalties over Anderlecht will live long in the memory and so will their epic F.A. Cup Final tussle against Manchester City. West Ham can look back with pride on a couple of truly marvellous F.A. Cup triumphs and QPR fans will recall with relish the stylish play of the mid 70's which took them to runners-up spot in the league.

Millwall experienced First Division football - joining Wimbledon, whose meteoric rise from non-League status represents one of football's most amazing stories of all time.

Packed with action, this dvd will bring back all the great memories from 21 years of London football.

Narrated by Brian Moore.

GRAHAM TAYLOR - Do I Not Like That This is the story of Graham Taylor, and the failure of England to qualify for the world cup. If Steve McClaren thinks he's having a bad time now, then he needs to watch this and see what Graham Taylor received.

This fantastic sports film goes behind the scenes in England's attempt to qualify for the 1994 world cup. With some hilarious scenes with Paul Gascoigne and Carlton Palmer, England training sessions a free kick routine that came off to perfection, press reaction and crowd reaction, and the feelings of Graham Taylor and much more.

See highlights of key games, and the touchline ramblings of Taylor, McMenemy and Phil Neal, with McMenemy and Neal almost like repeating dolls, repeating every word Taylor says.

World Cup semi-finalists to non-qualifiers in just 3 years. What happened to England's football team?

The television show 'An Impossible Job', which was broadcast to 6 million stunned viewers and to wide critical acclaim, only told part of the story.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND - Road To America At 9.28pm on the 17th of November 1993 1.5 million people fell silent in front of TV sets across the land. The unthinkable was about to happen. When all hope seemed lost Alan McLoughlin scored the most important goal of his life and the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup dream had come true.

This was the climax of a story which started eighteen months before, a story which took the Irish team and their fans on a journey from Lansdowne Road to Copenhagen, Seville, Tirana, Riga, Vilnius and Belfast. That journey is “The Road to America” – an exclusive feature film which captures the goals, the action, the emotion and the drama of Ireland’s qualification for the 1994 World Cup.

Steve Bruce - Captain's Log 2 - 1994/95 Steve Bruce once again takes us behind the scenes at Britain's biggest Football Club. Obviously the first Captain's Log must have been a hit as Stevie's back with another look at Manchester United's fight in the Premiership. Sadly he picked the wrong season this time as United narrowly lost out in the Championship to Blackburn Rovers. However, this up and down season means some interesting footage can be seen on this video.

LEYTON ORIENT: YOURS FOR A FIVER Orient: Club for a Fiver (AKA: Yours For A Fiver) was made by film student Jo Trehearne. The film follows the club during one of their worst seasons. On top of that the club also face financial difficulties.

This film is a low budget film. There's shots were the camera goes out-of-focus and shots which are too brightly or dimly lit. The film is a fly on the wall documentary and is conventional in its style. The graphics used on the title sequences also look dated. With documentaries now featuring flashy graphics, fully composed scores and advanced editing techniques. Club for a fiver looks dated; fortunately this film is so well made and compelling that it isn't an issue.

There's plenty of dramatic moments: The team fail to score in eight games (in a row) and Chairman Tony Wood's coffee business collapsing are two memorable dramatic moments. It also features joint manager John Sitton's legendary sweary changing room rants(which featured in Channel 4's 100 Greatest TV Moments From Hell).

As far as I know Jo Trehearne has not directed another broadcast film but it is clear she has talent as a director. The films low budget shows but it adds to the realism. The footage captured and the unusual events make this film what it is. I'm not a fan of Leyton Orient but I think this is an excellent documentary that has rightfully deserved cult status among football fans.

HILLSBOROUGH This powerful ITV docu-drama charts the stories of those touched by the worst disaster ever to hit British football, when 96 people lost their lives. The film follows three families, from their initial excitement at getting tickets for the game, to the disaster and the subsequent emotional and legal struggles. As the families try to come to terms with their losses and fight for justice, police evidence goes missing and further questions arise.
Christopher Eccleston is Trevor Hicks, whose heartbreaking story forms the central focus of McGovern’s riveting screenplay. Hicks’s two teenage daughters, Sarah 19 and Vicki 15, died, crushed to death, in the disaster.

Hillsborough was listed (in 2000) by the British Film Institute as one of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes ever; and on Channel 4 (in March 2007) Hillsborough was ranked 37 in the top 50 Greatest Dramas ever on British Television. BARCA: The Inside Story Barca is a study of Barcelona Football Club from the inside, during one of its more traumatic years, 2003-2004. This is a film about the business of football - you will see the players but ultimately you spend far more time with the people who do the contracts, figure out whether the club is going bust or not, and show up to every match with a sense of pride that is usually reserved for bright children at school.

Barca is a rarity among football clubs, in the sense that its members and fans are also its shareholders. It's run by an attractive oligarchy of forty-something Catalan businessmen. Watch the chorizo consumption in the film - see how the managerial class get fatter and fatter as the season goes on, and as Barca manages to rescue itself from disaster, becoming a first-rate club again. Wonderful.

RIO's WORLD CUP WIND UPS Rio's World Cup Wind-Ups was a short English hidden camera practical joke show hosted by English footballer Rio Ferdinand which was filmed shortly before the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The show strongly resembled the American show Punk'd which is hosted and produced by Ashton Kutcher. Ferdinand chose certain English footballers to play a prank on. The pranks would usually end with the catchphrase You got merk'd!.

Gary Neville: Neville (and Giggs) comes for training and parks his car. Cops stop him and charge him for speeding and a number of traffic offences and proceed to detain Giggs and interrogate Neville.
Ashley Cole: Cole is visiting a music recording studio for a charity deal. The sound engineer's American partner then accuses him of deleting the track vocal parts and messing things up.
Shaun Wright-Phillips: Wright-Phillips accidentally gets an Albanian immigrant restaurant worker deported back to Zimbabwe. (John Terry was supposed to be the victim but he found out after seeing the message in his wife's cellphone explaining the prank. Terry then found Wright-Phillips as a substitute.)
Peter Crouch: Crouch is offered an investment deal by an Indian businessman whose Russian business partners later barge in and demand money.
Wayne Rooney: Rooney is visiting a dogs' home with his wife Colleen when a little boy's dog dies.
David James: James goes to an art gallery and he is accused of breaking a piece of artwork made by a French artist.
David Beckham: Beckham is picked up by a driver that takes a detour to make him late for his meeting.

RISE OF THE ROOS - The Road to Germany 2006 Thirty years of hurt - or thirty one to be exact. The Australian national team had failed in its previous SEVEN attempts to qualify for the biggest sporting event in the world. When the squad gathered in Adelaide in May 2004 to begin another long road of qualifiers, little did they know that this campaign would culminate in one of the most dramatic nights - not just in Australian football - but in Australian sporting history.

The RISE OF THE ROOS charts the Socceroos Road to Germany. From games against the likes of Vanuatu and Fiji in Adelaide in front of a few hardy souls, to the tumultuous evening at Telstra Stadium on November 16, 2005, the curse of previous generations was finally lifted in that epic penalty shootout win over Uruguay.

Australian football fans have waited a long time for success but their belief in the Socceroos has never wavered. Now, finally, belatedly, wonderfully and joyfully, the wait is over.

BIG RON MANAGER - Part 1 Big Ron Manager Starts 22nd August 2007. 10pm
Languishing in Football League Two, Peterborough United has long been in need of a bit of luck, and a good run of form. They exist on the knife-edge of bankruptcy, and struggle to attract more than 5,000 fans to their London Road stadium.

Last season things started to look up for the Posh. A play-off place was in sight, there was the chance of a trip to Cardiff, and the lucrative opportunity of promotion to Coca-Cola League One. But with a rookie caretaker manager at the helm, Sky One decided to send them a bit of help.

Enter Ron Atkinson.

There is little the former Manchester United, Coventry City, West Bromwich Albion, Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa manager doesn’t know about football after three decades in the game, and he is willing to share his know-how with anybody willing to listen, as he attempts to guide this struggling side through the trials and tribulations of the remaining three months of the season. Big Ron will live and breathe Peterborough United, in a bid to help them land that elusive play-off place. He will patrol the boardroom, corridors and dressing rooms of the club to try and suggest ways of helping turn them into an upwardly mobile League One outfit.

With unprecedented access to the club and its staff – on and off the field – this series will be a unique view of what it’s really like to pilot a professional team around the lower leagues in the modern football era of overpaid, oversexed and over-hyped Premier League superstars.

WHEN BIG RON WENT IFFY When Big Ron Went Iffy
Sky One, 10.00 pm

Before Ron Atkinson carried out his troubleshooting stint at Peterborough United, he attempted to do the same last season for Division One strugglers Swindon Town - and it didn’t go well. Looking back now, it’s easy to see why: rookie manager Iffy Onoura didn’t appreciate his presence and made it plain he wanted to do the job on his own (he also felt Atkinson had never apologised properly for his infamous racist comment about Marcel Desailly in 2004). Atkinson felt his input wasn’t taken seriously, though he didn’t exactly help his cause by immediately going on a two-week holiday to Barbados. As the two look back on why it all went wrong, it’s clear poor Swindon was too small a place for two competing egos. No wonder Big Ron departed less than month after he arrived.

NEW YORK COSMOS: Once In A Lifetime In the 1970s the New York Cosmos were a superstar soccer team that attracted thousands of fans to their games, almost raising the sport to the level of football and baseball in America.

ONCE IN A LIFETIME charts the Cosmos' spectacular rise and fall. In the 1970s, a group of high-profile businessmen, led by Warner Bros. head Steve Ross and Atlantic Records gurus Ahmet and Nehui Ertegun, decided to bring the world's most popular international sport, soccer, to the United States in a big way.

So they gathered their resources, called in favours, and bought the New York Cosmos, part of a fledgling, somewhat pathetic new league. Within a few years they had collected many of the game's greatest players, creating a nearly unstoppable team that were as successful on the field as they were in the gossip pages and such clubs as Studio 54--until their egos got in the way.

Paul Crowder and John Dower tell this fascinating story of greed, power, and fame in an entertaining documentary. Crowder and Dower mix in terrific archival footage of the Cosmos with 1970s-era Manhattan and new interviews with many of the primary characters, including Cosmos stars Giorgio Chinaglia (cast as the villain), Carlos Alberto, Franz Beckenbauer, Shep Messing (who talks about posing naked for a women's magazine), soccer lover Henry Kissinger, broadcasters Marv Albert and Paul Gardner, Rodney Marsh, journalist David Hirshey, and many others.

Interestingly, Pelé, the man whose multimillion-dollar signing started it all, declined to participate in the project, although he's well represented in the movie. From the patchy field at Randalls Island to packed houses at Giants stadium, ONCE IN A LIFETIME--narrated by Matt Dillon (CRASH)--details the rise and fall of the mighty Cosmos, set to a great 1970s soundtrack that includes songs from Kool and the Gang, Steely Dan, Junior Walker, Donna Summer, the Commodores, and the Main Ingredient, helping make the film a fabulous document of a crazy time.

Hillsborough Remembered To mark the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough stadium disaster, the HISTORY Channel will be paying tribute by presenting a testimonial film to the people of Liverpool and football fans across the land.

On 15th April 1989, Liverpool faced Nottingham Forest in the semi-final of the FA Cup at Hillsborough stadium, Sheffield. Yet in what was to become Britain’s worst-ever sporting disaster, 96 people died, crushed to death on overcrowded terraces.

The events at Hillsborough shattered a community and shook the world of football to its very core. A public inquiry by Lord Justice Taylor concluded that the main cause of the disaster was “failure of police control”.

In this incredibly moving tribute, Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish and various other Liverpool players from the day, speak about the events at Hillsborough on camera for the very first time. He joins families who lost loved ones, survivors, and players as they discuss what happened on that fateful day.

THE DAMMED UNITED Based on the best-selling book of the same name, The Damned United is the story of one of Britain’s finest ever football managers, Brian Clough, and his curtailed 44-day reign at the helm of Leeds United. It turns out it’s also the tale of his formative years at Derby County, the story of his rivalry with previous Leeds United boss Don Revie, and ultimately, the exploration of his relationship with his assistant, Peter Taylor.
The film explores the story by moving backwards and forwards in time, but always at the heart of The Damned United is its trump card. Michael Sheen has already richly deserved an abundance of plaudits in his acting career, not least for his superb portrayal of David Frost in Frost/Nixon, and he carves out another terrific performance here. Taking on the challenge of playing the larger than life Clough, his work here is tremendous, and the highlight of an already-strong cast that also features Timothy Spall and Colm Meaney.

The Two Escobars Pablo Escobar was the richest, most powerful drug lord in the world, ruling the Medellín Cartel with an iron fist. Andres Escobar was the biggest soccer star in Colombia. Although not related, their fates were inextricably-and fatally-intertwined. Pablo's drug money had turned the national team into South American champions, but when Andres scored an ""own goal"" that eliminated his team from the 1994 World Cup it ultimately cost him his life. For Colombians, soccer was far more than a game: their entire national identity rode on the success or failure of their team. The Two Escobars is a riveting examination of the intersection of sports, crime, and politics.
